Hello,
I am very disappointed...
I have now some time ago a LuxFibre P&T Internet line.
As soon as I had changed from LuxDSL to LuxFibre, outgoing SMTP w/ SSL
over Port 465 is not working any more.
Because I am now in a situation where I would need to have this port
open to send Emails by a third-party Email provider,
I decided to call the P&T HelpDesk.
They tried to explain that the port is not working due to technical
reasons which are LuxFibre specific, and I shall use port 587 (StartTLS).
I told them that:
1. my third-party email provider does not have the port 587 open for SMTP
That's unusual for a "third-party email provider".
2. this is not acceptable. I pay for an Internet
Access which shall not
be limited by some blocked ports
They just answered that they do not care.
"Daat geht eis jo naischt un wann dier net den Service vun der Post
benotzt"...
Well, I guess the HelpDesk person had a bad day.
What shall I do now?
1. asking my email provider to add and open the SMTP StartTLS service?
If you absolutely have to send via their server,
definitely yes. Or maybe even use their webmail
service :->
2. blame the P&T for their ignorance?
P&T is by default blocking outgoing SMTP unless it's via
their own platform, which does antivirus and antispam
filtering and requires authentication.
This is self-protection, so as to avoid getting their IP
ranges onto blacklists and thereby getting into rather
serious trouble such as, for an extreme case, having the
entire AS blacklisted).
This is pretty standard for ISPs nowadays.
Do you have a good reason *not* sending through the P&T
platform?
I am sure that many people have this problem...?
Actually, normal residential customers do not have a
problem with this.
Professional customers which have opted for a static IP
or "pack pro" can get SMTP ports opened, but will then
have to see by themselves to keep their IP "clean" (i.e.
off blacklists).
Best regards,
Michel
