Coditel allows all-port traffic. You are using Mozilla which has an
excellent search feature. Just use it. It has all been answered on this
list. Coditel only blocked port 25 for a short time. It was a screw up.
Let's consider the Esch-sur-Alzette network.
There is a single cable

head-end for the city and surrounding areas. The same
signal is thus
delivered to the 25000 homes connected. If you say 10% only of the
subscribers will apply for Internet services, and that 10% only will be
connected at the same time, it gives you 250 users sharing the same
bandwidth. The bandwidth of a cable-TV channel thanks its advanced
modulation scheme is about 24 Mb/s max, leading to 100 Kb/s per
sacrified TV channel. And the problem is even worse at return path
I have a problem following this calculation. 10% of 25000 is 2500
leaving only 10Kb/s according your calculation ;-)
long as your cable-TV provider is not too successfull,
OK, it's working.
Let see what will happend in some years.
The same thing that will happen to an ADSL provider. Either their
investments follow the increased utilization or not.
People want a service. ADSL is only a technology. The technology doesn't
matter to the customer.
Cable access is by no ways inferior to ADSL. I have enough experience to
compare: I used Europe's largest DSL service for more than 2 years (even
at 786Kbit/s). You even do not need the PPPoE dialup thing (you get a IP
address by DHCP if you do not pay for a static one), which means that
you do not have to dial in and you have much larger MTUs than you have
with PPPoE. It is much simpler to set up (no CHAP and so on) and much
closer to a real network connection than to a dialup line.
Am am glad for you that you have never experienced a network problem
with Alternet. This are good news for anybody thinking about a switch.
But this also means that you have no experience with the helpdesk and
that you are not able to answer my questions. Simply say: I do not know
how they handle this, because I never experienced a problem. This serves
energy ;-)
