Hello all!
I just wanted to now: How do you use Linux?
For all tasks:
desktop: web browsing, mail, LaTeX, online banking, development, ...
server: apache/php, sendmail/mailman, dns, samba, ..., cf LLL
I very rarely boot into windows (mostly for testing LLL system), and
when I do, it's most often in a vmware/qemu environment...
Do you have it installed on your personal computer?
I've got Linux installed:
1. On my desktop at home
2. On my desktop at work
3. On my laptop
Wich distribution do you use?
1. My home desktop and my laptop have SuSE 9.2,
2. At work I use Fedora Core II.
3. I've got a Knoppix CD for demo'ing purposes or for use on computers
which do not yet have Linux installed.
Why?
SuSE ==> as a kernel developer, I regularly got free installation CD's
from SuSE. At the time, SuSE had a packaging structure which was very
similar to the distribution I used before (SLS), and was very complete
(for a long time, SuSE had the biggest collection of applications).
Some of this is no longer true (package format, ...), but in the
meantime, I've become so familiar with it that I stuck with it (for
my home systems).
Fedora/Redhat ==> is the distribution that my employer recommends
Knoppix ==> is the best known "live CD" distribution, and, AFAIK,
supports more hardware than SuSE's and RedHat's Live CDs.
Have you tried other distributions?
I've occasionnally experimented with Mandrake, however these
experiments didn't leave a favorable impression (unreliability due to
inclusion of alpha/beta software, sometimes excessive KDE
customization). I must admit, though, that these unfavorable
impressions were some time ago, so maybe they've improved with their
more recent versions.
Before knowing SuSE, I used SLS ("Softlanding Systems") which is the
predecessor of Slackware.
And perhaps: how long do you use Linux?
Since January 1993.
thank you.

My answer:
I have a dual boot XP-Mandrake 10.1 on my PC. Just bought the Mandrake
10.1 DVD, a few months ago. and i'm very satisfied with it.
I'm on Linux for about 2.5 years. and i never used an other distribution
than mandrake. And i don't plan to use a other in a close future.
