I have written something like that already, have a look at
http://www.homepages.lu/pu/dynIP.html, especially at the module
dtZyxel650. It works for a Zxyel 650 and gets your the WAN IP address.
Other info should be straightforward.
That is a PHP-Only project though.
Mine is Python, of course ;-) And it works via telnet, that was easier
to do in this case.
I have a python Chrono Program with sql-bindings that

I once wrote things like that for Road Runners Echternach and the
Swimming Club of Echternach (don't remember it's name). One was on a BBC
Micro in Basic and assembler. I still have a copy around, but you might
have trouble finding the hardware ;-)
More seriously, this does not look very technical, as opposed to your
first suggestion.
