Basic Linux Course for Beginners by LiLux a.s.b.l. Participants will learn simple basics about the functionning of a computer and it's use with a SuSE 9.2 KDE desktop. There will be presentations - including configuration where necessary - and exercises with the main desktop applications available, including text processing, spreadsheets, presentation, web browsing, email, chat, graphics, multimedia, etc. LiLux will also explain how to get online. Starting with a short overview of computer components, we'll see how to log into a pre-installed SuSE 9.2 system. We will show how to set basic system settings using Yast2, including internet access, printer and scanner configuration. We'll show you how to configure and make good use of a number of common applications: - office suites: - OpenOffice.org (Writer, Calc, Impress) - KOffice (KWord, KSpread, KPresenter) - media player: mplayer, xine, amaroK, xmms - flowcharts: Kivio, dia - publishing: scribus - graphics: The Gimp, inkscape, sodipodi, digikam, gtkam, ... - web browsing: Mozilla Browser, Firefox, Konqueror - email: Mozilla Mail, Thunderbird, Evolution, Kmail - chat: kopete, gaim, xchat - file sharing: bittorrent, ... The installation of a GNU/Linux system or the usage of a command line will not be included in this course.
