Hi,
I'm using a cable-modem and need to find out what it's MAC number is.
1) is this equivalent to the MAC address of an ethernet adapter?
2) does anyone know how to find this MAC number using Linux?

Hi,
try to use arp -a or arp ip-address-of-cable-modem
usually the cable-modem has its own MAC address.
Also it is possible that the 2 interfaces in the modem have its own MAC
address.
f.ex.: LAN-Interface of cable modem has MAC address 1
and cable-Interface of modem has MAC-address 2

Although arp -a gives me a different adress from ifconfig -a, it's still
not accepted by the network...

why do you need the mac of the modem anyway?
ifconfig gives you the mac of your ethernet card.
with arp -e or tcpdump (as i described earlier) you can find out the mac of
the modem.
i'm not 100% sure, but think that the modem only has 1 mac.

Wouldn't that depend on the exact make of the modem?
At least, I know that for Wifi access points, some brands use a
different Mac for their ethernet connector than for the wireless
interface, whereas other brands use twice the same.
If the cable modem uses a different Mac for its cable interface, it
might indeed be somewhat hard to find out, unless it is printed
somewhere on the modem or in its documentation.

i suppose it's a modem from coditel ?
i'm a coditel customer myself too.
so i have the same one...
the modem has only one mac.
it should be printed on a sticker, which is on top or at the bottom of the
modem.
it should as well be printed on the contract.
the mac may be found out by the methods described before.
using tcpdump you can even see non-inet-routable traffic, so even if the modem
had a second mac, you would be able to find it out.
i only now thought about the sticker etc... :-) sorry

I'm trying to see where I am but it keeps aksing me for a MAC adress for
my cable-modem... I checked from the sticker on the modem, from the
papers I got with the modem, with arp, ifconfig, etc...
Not one of the numbers I'm able to find seems to work with their site.

if people start or keep bugging them they will probably try to fix that.

the case.
Until recently, they were saying that they hadn't fixed a solution to
reliably see the counters, now they say they do. What I'm trying to
check is whether their solution (only) works with IE or whether it also
works with Mozilla/Linux or Firefox/Linux.

Hi,
I'm also a Coditel customer. IF the URL you are mentioning is the following
http://www.lu.coditel.net/ then it's the one on the modem. It worked for me
the last months but now, as I am checking, it doesn't work.
Maybe it's temporarily.
BTW, the website counts, I use to see when I was over my 10G but the bills
stayed the same.... :)

yes
do this:
tcpdump -i <ethernetdevice>
then, turn your modem off, and back on.
now you should see some traffic generated by your modem, including the mac of
your modem.
